TWO ACCOUNTS OF SOCIAL DIFFERENCE

The joint scope condition of SCT and SIT, which is the situation to which the predictions of both theories apply, entails groups where members are task- and collectively oriented (Kalkhoff & Barnum, 2000; Oldmeadow, Platow, & Foddy, 2005; Oldmeadow, Platow, Foddy, & Anderson, 2003). Task-orientation is the motivation to complete a task where members can define successes and failures. Collective-orientation is the belief it is necessary and legitimate to consider input from all members for task completion. The clinic visit fits the joint scope condition because both parties are motivated to manage the patient’s health successfully, and they deem input from the other as necessary (Gallagher, Gregory, Bianchi, Hartung, & Harkness, 2005; Peck & Conner, 2011). Some patients prefer passive roles, that is, lesser input from themselves and greater input from their providers (Joseph-Williams, Elwyn, & Edwards, 2014), and I will discuss how each theory accounts for this.
